TCM arthritis
Book an appointmentCauses of arthritis:
Arthritis arises when there is blockage of Qi and blood, preventing them from flowing through the body’s energy pathways.
Most poeple are able to resist their body from invasion by climatological factors of wind, cold, heat, and/or dampness. However, when there are internal disharmonies (caused by factors such as stress, insufficient blood and Qi, genes, poor diet, joint injury, ageing, weak joints or lack of rest and exercise) in the Qi and blood, it can predispose one to Bi syndrome (TCM term for arthritis). Bi syndrome causes certain parts of the body to feel pain and soreness. When wind, cold, and dampness penetrate the body’s defense mechanism and enter the muscles, tendons and joints, stiffness and pain can be felt.
Treatment of arthritis:
Similar to Western medicine, TCM aims to reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. But rather than only reducing the symptoms, TCM aims to eliminate the root cause by improving the movement of blood and Qi in the body.
Once the type of arthritis is diagnosed, physicians use a variety of techniques to treat its painful symptoms. Some of the more popular techniques used are acupuncture, acupressure and herbal remedies. But of course diet changes and exercises will boost the effectiveness of the treatment.
-Acupuncture is often employed to treat the symptoms of arthritis pain, as a complement to herbal techniques. Needles are placed into points surrounding the painful area, stimulating circulation in the area and help relieve pain and swelling. Acupuncture treatment usually takes a couple of weeks for it to have prolonged relief of pain symptoms from arthritis. In some less severe cases, ig may only require a few treatments. However, for a more chronic, long-term arthritic condition, acupuncture treatment can take months or even years to resolve. Hence it is best to start treatment early.
-For less invasive techniques to releve pain, acupressure can be tried. During acupressure, pressure is applied using the physician’s fingers, over the acupoints.
